Jean White Ceramic Vases
Characterful birds in beautiful detail on soft pastel shade Parian clay vessels, what's not to love about these subtly evocative vases from Jean White?
Utilising her illustration skills, Jean carves and models drawings into clay. From these carvings she then creates her own plaster moulds and slip casts each piece in Parian clay from the moulds.
Jean references the traditional processes employed in Wedgwood’s Jasperware, combining sprigged work with clean contemporary shapes, in soft pastel shades.
The smaller vase features a white convex Skylark design, sitting proudly on the surface of the pastel pink vessel. The taller vase features a concave Dodo design, impressed into the form for the pale yellow/lemon vessel.
Combining her previous career as a professional illustrator and her MA in Design Craft from Manchester Metropolitan University, through her ceramic works Jean White aims to raise awareness of the conservation status of red-list British bird species, species which are threatened. Her images rely on the visual similarity of fossils to the low relief of ceramics sprigs, creating a metaphor for the threat to our native birds’ existence.
