Mark Smith Ceramic and Salvaged Objects Sculptures
Making their long awaited return to the gallery, Mark Smith's whimsical Sea-inspired sculptures mix beautifully handcrafted ceramic characters with salvaged driftwood and quirky rusty metal details.
Mark uses a variety of decoration techniques which allows for a freedom of creativity when he is working, and the resulting outcomes mean that no two pieces are ever the same. Mark's signature style incorporates clay that has the textures of metal and wood objects salvaged, press moulded, and patched together to produce a variety of forms that look as though they have sailed the Seven Seas.
These two beautiful sculptures are perfect examples of how Mark draws inspiration from the Sea, and creates each piece with its own story to tell. Quirky and light-hearted narratives jump straight out of the story books, and the inclusion of objects discovered on the shoreline find themselves becoming part of the tale.
'Blue Whale' features a charming character created in ceramic and artfully painted with bright blue and white slip, securely balanced above a gnarled and knotted piece of drift wood, atop another block of painted and weathered wood. Rusted metal wire and a blue ceramic swirl depict coral on the sea bed, with a final 'spray' from Blue Whale illustrated with a scavenged metal twist.
'Small House' depicts a weather-worn harbour-side shack formed in ceramic, sat on top of a distressed and painted wooden block. The white slip-painted surface is accentuated by delicate details in pastel pink, green and bright blue, with a dark slate grey roof. A found metal anchor charm swings from a rusty metal wire, while the chimney at the top of the tall and narrow house is actually an old nail cleverly placed by the artist.
